January vs September Intake: Which UK Intake Should You Choose?

Planning to study in the UK but not sure whether you should start in January or September?

You are not alone.

Many Nigerian students assume that September is automatically the better option, while others choose January simply because they missed the September deadline. But the right intake depends on your course, university, preparation timeline and personal circumstances.

So, which one should you choose?

What Is the Difference Between January and September Intake?

The intake simply refers to the period when a university allows new students to begin their course.

September/October is the main UK university intake. Most degree courses start around this period, so students generally have more programmes and universities to choose from. (UCAS)

January is a smaller intake. Some universities offer courses beginning in January, but the range is usually more limited, especially for undergraduate programmes. (UCAS)

That does not mean January is a bad option. It simply means you need to research your course carefully.

Why Choose the September Intake?

September is often the best choice if you want the widest range of options.

You are more likely to find your preferred course, university and location available for a September start.

It can also be a good option if you have enough time to properly prepare your application, arrange your finances, meet your university’s requirements and complete your visa process.

Another advantage is that September is the traditional start of the academic year, so many university activities, societies and student events are organised around this intake.

Why Choose the January Intake?

January can make sense if you are not ready for September or you have missed the September application window.

For example, perhaps you are still completing your documents, waiting for an academic result, preparing your English language evidence or simply need more time to organise your plans.

A January intake can give you another opportunity to start without necessarily waiting until the following September.

However, do not choose January simply because you want to travel sooner.

First confirm that your preferred course is actually available for January.

UCAS currently lists a range of courses with January starts, but these are much less common than the traditional September/October starts. (UCAS)

January vs September: Which Is Better?

There is no universal winner.

If you…Consider
Want the widest choice of coursesSeptember
Want the widest choice of universitiesSeptember
Need more time to prepareJanuary
Missed the September intakeJanuary
Already have everything ready for your preferred courseSeptember
Found your specific course available in JanuaryJanuary could work
Are applying for a course that rarely has January startsSeptember

The most important thing is not to choose an intake before choosing the right course.

Does January Intake Have Fewer Courses?

Generally, yes.

This is one of the biggest differences students need to understand.

A university may offer a particular programme in September but not January. Another university may offer the same subject in both intakes.

This is why searching for “January intake universities” alone is not enough.

Start with your course and career goal, then check which universities offer it and when they accept new students.

UCAS recommends that international students research the course carefully and check the specific application information provided by the university. (UCAS)

What About Your Student Visa?

Whichever intake you choose, you still need to meet the relevant requirements for your UK Student visa.

Your university will need to issue the appropriate CAS before you can make your Student visa application, and you need to allow enough time for the visa process before your course begins.

So don’t wait until the last minute just because you have received an offer.

Your admission, CAS, visa and travel arrangements all need to fit together.

So, Which Intake Should You Choose?

Choose September if your priority is having more course and university options and you are ready to prepare your application properly.

Consider January if your preferred course is available, but you need more time or missed the September intake.

There is no prize for choosing one intake over the other.

The better decision is the one that gives you the right course, at the right university, with enough time to prepare a strong application.

Before Choosing Your Intake, Ask Yourself:

  • Is my preferred course available in January?
  • Which intake gives me more university options?
  • Do I have all my required documents?
  • Am I ready for the financial and visa requirements?
  • Do I have enough time to complete the application properly?
  • Am I choosing this intake because it is genuinely suitable, or simply because I want to travel sooner?

If you can answer these questions clearly, your decision becomes much easier.

January and September can both be good starting points for studying in the UK. The important thing is not to choose an intake based on what another student did.
