Doctoral Research in Mathematical Physics, Utrecht University, Netherlands

Application Deadline: 20th July, 2025

An interesting opportunity is available for a fully funded PhD position in mathematical physics, focusing on the interplay between microlocal analysis and quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. The project investigates quantum fields on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, primarily with techniques from partial differential equations on manifolds.

Your job

You will work on quantization and renormalization problems for quantum fields on asymptotically anti-de Sitter backgrounds with methods of microlocal analysis. A key goal of the project is to develop robust mathematical techniques for analyzing and computing physical quantities in the generic absence of symmetries. You will be embedded in the Utrecht Geometry Centre within the Mathematical Institute, a vibrant research hub with many activities such as seminars, working groups, and conferences. You will participate in the activities of our research team of PhD candidates and postdocs and engage in interdisciplinary interactions as well as undergraduate teaching.

Your qualities

We welcome applicants with a Master’s degree in mathematics, who meet the following qualifications:

  • You have a strong background on partial differential equations on manifolds, microlocal analysis, mathematical Quantum Field Theory or a closely related area.
  • You are interested in applications in relativistic physics (an additional background in theoretical physics is very welcome).
  • You have an aptitude for and willingness to assist with undergraduate tutorials.
  • You have excellent English language and communication skills.

Our offer

a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

A position for 18 months, with an extension to a total of four years upon successful assessment in the first 18 months;

a gross monthly salary between €2.901 and €3.707 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale P under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));

8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
