Job summary
Health care support worker working within the multi disciplinary team providing care for adults of working age within an inpatient mental health unit.
If you don’t already have a Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant subject, RDaSH are offering this post alongside the opportunity for you to complete a Level 3apprenticeship qualification [relevant to your role].
As an apprentice within RDaSH you will be given the opportunity to gain experience, learn work-related skills and obtain all the tools needed to thrive.
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. Around 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying. This leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Main duties of the job
- Undertake agreed activities as delegated by a registered nurse, with patients / service users under the direct / indirect supervision of the qualified staff.
- Provide care for patients’ physical and psychological needs, taking into account personal preferences and choices ensuring that a high standard of patient care is achieved.
- Assist the relevant professionals during assessment / treatment / intervention where required, carrying out therapeutic and recreational programs under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Carry out simple nursing procedures as instructed at the discretion of Registered Nurses, reporting on and recording findings, (e.g. blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration rate, maintaining fluid balance charts, diet charts, testing urine, weighing patients) whilst demonstrating the ability to recognise abnormalities and report to the nursing members of the team.
- Observe and provide feedback of current patient’s status and presentation to appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living that they cannot achieve alone, seeking advice from and reporting to Registered Nurses as required
- When required, visiting patients in the community with identified tasks as part of their care.
- At the discretion of Registered Nurses, escorting patients between departments and on therapeutic outings.
Qualifications
Essential
- English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9-4 or A*- C or functional skills level 2)
- NVQ Level 2 in a related subject
- NVQ level 3 in related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship
Experience
Essential
- Demonstrate a keen interest caring for others
- Previous experience of caring for patients in a clinical setting
- Previous experience of working as part of a team
Desirable
- Previous experience of supervision of staff
- Understand importance of maintaining confidentiality
